Infertility, or involuntary childlessness, is defined as when pregnancy fails despite regular unprotected intercourse for one year. This affects about 15 percent of the population of childbearing age.

It is estimated that about two-thirds of those who wish to become pregnant can have children after investigation and treatment.

The term "fertility treatment" includes several different medical techniques, such as insemination and in vitro fertilization (IVF). Both insemination and IVF can be treated with own or donated gametes. Treatment by donation of eggs or sperm was permitted according to Swedish legislation in year 2003.

Since January 2019, it is allowed to donate both eggs and sperm at the same treatment.
Donation of embryos is also allowed.
All kinds of donation and treatment of single woman is allowed at both public and private clinics in Sweden.

The Quality Register includes identified data from all IVF- and donor insemination treatments in Sweden, whether they led to childbirth or not. The register also contains information about the partner.

The purpose of the register is to monitor treatment results and possible medical risks for both the IVF children and treated women and men. It should also provide the participating units with a basis for their development and quality work. The register also forms a basis for scientific work.
